Why consult an ENT?

Often required to operate, otolaryngology is a surgical specialty in its own right, so it is also a head and neck surgeon. If the ENT treats benign acute ailments, such as ear infections, nasopharyngitis, pharyngitis toddlers, skills are extended to the serious cancers of the mouth. A tonsillectomy removal, hearing loss, polyps in the throat, a broken nose … this is the work of the ENT!

When to consult?

The ENT sphere brings together many organs that may require care:

  • The ear
  • Throat (with mouth, tongue, larynx, trachea)
  • Nose and sinuses
  • Salivary glands
  • The neck and the thyroid gland

In children, ENT disorders are common with risks of superinfection and hearing loss, so parents are advised to consult this specialist on the advice of their doctor. The ORL consults in a hospital ward, in a private clinic, or more frequently in a private practice.

Symptoms

In the adult

Consultation may be required when the following symptoms occur at:

  • The ear: persistent pain, hearing loss, clogged ear sensation, hissing, buzzing.
  • Nose and sinuses: snoring, loss of smell, allergic manifestations.
  • Throat and larynx: discomfort to swallow, presence of lumps, ganglia, paralysis.

Patients most at risk for ENT disorders are smokers and regular users of alcohol. It is also advisable regular monitoring if one is subject to occupational hazards such as building workers (loud noise, dust and hazardous products).

In the child

The nose / throat / ear sphere is a privileged area for viruses and bacteria in children. A consultation at an ENT may be recommended by the pediatrician or the treating physician in case of recurrent disease, or if discomfort handicaps the child daily.

  • Ear: repeated ear infections, persistent pain, hearing loss, wheezing
  • Nose and sinuses: allergic manifestations, loss of smell, repeated sinusitis.
  • Throat and larynx: recurrent tonsillitis, abnormal ganglia, difficulty in swallowing. The ENT is particularly the specialist to consult in case of suspicion of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux), which can be confirmed by the examination (fibroscopy in particular).

Pathologies

  • Nasal and sinus disorders: rhinitis, sinusitis, ethmoiditis.
  • Ear disorders: otitis externa, seromucous otitis media otitis media, cholesteatoma, transmission / perception deafness.
  • Throat disorders: tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, epiglottitis, vocal cord nodules, chronic vocal disruption.
  • Swallowing disorders and loss of taste.
  • Tumors of the throat, mouth or larynx.
  • Fractures of the facial mass (malar, floor of the orbit, rock, nose, malformations that may require cosmetic surgery.

This health professional is involved in a course of care coordinated by his doctor.

How is the consultation conducted?

Like any doctor, the ENT starts his consultation by asking the patient about his symptoms, the discomfort he feels, about his personal and family history, about his possible risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, exposure to dangerous particles).

Then comes an examination of the organs in question with a control of the functions related to these organs. The ears and nose are examined using a speculum, the throat with a small spatula. Depending on the result of this examination, the specialist may decide to implement complementary techniques.

Rhinofibroscopy, examination of the nasal fossae also to visualize the pharynx and the larynx. The progression of the endoscope in the nasal cavity can trigger a pain associated with a reflex nausea, obviously temporary.

Sinuscopy, an examination that specifically explores sinuses and nasal mucous membranes under local anesthesia. It is usually performed in case of chronic sinusitis, the doctor can then take samples, or even treat abnormalities detected (with injections of drugs for example).

Indirect laryngoscopy does not use endoscopic equipment. The doctor examines the throat from the outside with a frontal light by introducing a small mirror in the throat (which stops at the bottom of the mouth). This examination does not require anesthesia and is performed during a simple consultation in ENT.

Direct laryngoscopy uses a laryngoscope to examine the inside of the throat. This examination under general anesthesia requires a short hospitalization, especially if it is associated with an operative endoscopy (foreign body, removal of a tumor, taking a sample for analysis).

Reimbursement of care

As part of the coordinated care path, the attending physician may prescribe a specialized opinion. The ENT is a medico-surgical specialty and it is now necessary to be guided by his doctor to request an ENT opinion.

Should I consult an ENT quickly?
